A Nigerian business man has committed suicide inside Kuje Prison Abuja. The business man identified as Obinna Echianu who was 43 years old has committed suicide inside the Kuje Correctional Centre (Kuje Prison) in Abuja.
Obinna Echianu was first convicted and sentenced to death for killing an Uber driver identified as Edwin Ali in Abuja in 2020.
According to the news, Echianu was arraigned along with 27-year-old Nnorom, a student, by the police on five counts bordering on armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and culpable homicide.
The prosecutor, Donatus Abah had told the court that the businessman, from Abia State and Nnorom, from Imo State on December 25, 2016, conspired to commit the offence of armed robbery and culpable homicide, punishable with death.
Topic New Nigeria gathered that the duo robbed one Inalegwu Edwin Ali of his Nissan Almera car and one mobile phone at Gosa pedestrian bridge, Airport Road, Abuja.
However, after the robbery, Echianu intentionally shot Inalegwu Edwin Ali in the head, causing his death.
The businessman, however being so dejected about his conviction decided to terminate his life inside the prison.
The source also told TopicNG that the accused Echianu “ went into the bathroom in his cell and hanged himself. His lifeless body was discovered dangling from a rope around his neck.
His reason are yet unknown thus leaving many with rhetoric questions of why a Nigerian Prison would give a person on death row such an easy access to a means of hanging himself.
